Corban OneSource vs. TriNet
How does a Managed Services Provider (MSP) compare to a PEO & ASO?
There is a large strategic and cost benefit for midsized organizations to partner with HR outsourcing firms. From administering benefit programs to handling payroll tax compliance, HR firms across the United States are a huge resource in helping your business thrive. Evaluating potential partner firms, however, can be a rather large undertaking. What’s the difference between a PEO and an HRO? Or an ASO and an MSP? Let’s compare Corban OneSource vs. TriNet – two HR outsourcing firms offering different styles of service.
What is TriNet?
TriNet is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) that provides HR, benefits, and payroll services to small and midsized businesses. At the beginning of 2025, they rolled out the Administrative Service Organization (ASO) component that removes the co-employment model that comes with a PEO, while offering similar services but in a different capacity. TriNet uses their own proprietary technology on both the PEO and ASO side.
Value proposition: TriNet offers access to enterprise-level HR infrastructure, allowing your small business to compete with much larger organizations.
What is Corban OneSource?
Corban OneSource is a Human Resources Outsourcer (HRO) that offers benefits, payroll, and HR services for midsized companies. As a boutique, they offer human-driven services and white glove treatments for their clients while alleviating administrative burden and managing day-to-day tasks of the HR department. While not offering proprietary software, they are a Managed Services Provider (MSP) who manages your ADP Workforce Now or Paylocity HCM.
Value proposition: Corban OneSource manages your day-to-day HR tasks, removing your administrative burden and allowing you time to focus on strategy and growth.
Service Model
This comparison is going to bring out all of the acronyms – PEO, ASO, HRO, and MSP. Let’s dive in and see how these service models differ.
TriNet (PEO or ASO) Offering two distinctive services, TriNet has long been known as a PEO. This is a co-employment model where the firm assumes some ownership over your business. For example, they will pay your employees using their tax ID. PEO services are bundled and self-administered, meaning you must use TriNet’s benefits plan offerings and cannot find your own broker. More recently, TriNet expanded services offering an ASO model. This allows more freedom in choosing your broker and offers more transparency in fees.
Corban OneSource (HRO or MSP) As an HRO that acts as a Managed Services Provider (MSP), you have much more autonomy over your HR department. You get to choose your own broker and pay your employees under your FEIN. Unlike an ASO, however, an MSP manages all your day-to-day tasks including your HCM technology. This truly opens the door for you to focus on the strategic component of your growing HR department.
What this means: TriNet (PEO) is an excellent service for small businesses or start-ups, and with the introduction of their ASO model, they are built better to scale as your business moves into the midsized classification. Corban OneSource truly manages your day-to-day operations as an MSP and will act more as an extension of your HR team.
HR Technology
Choosing the appropriate HCM software can either make or break your HR department.
TriNet (PEO or ASO) Every service administered by TriNet, whether it is on the PEO or ASO side, requires the client to use their proprietary software. This is an all-in-one system that handles the major functions as well as some elements of onboarding, compliance checks, time tracking, etc. TriNet emphasizes employee self-service first and relying on support staff when necessary.
Corban OneSource (HRO or MSP) No one size fits all is the approach Corban OneSource follows with HCM technology. While closely tied to ADP Workforce Now and Paylocity, many rigorous tests and years of experience have shown these two systems meet the needs of the midsized business market the best. Additionally, as an MSP, Corban OneSource will fully manage your HCM software, including onboarding, the HR module, benefits, payroll, and so much more.
What this means: TriNet offers a proprietary, all-in-one system that its clients are required to use. It is built as a self-service system first. Corban OneSource uses the HCM system that fits your business best, managing all aspects of day-to-day software tasks for you.
Benefits Administration
The benefits administration programs between the two firms vary by a somewhat large margin, though there are more similarities between an ASO and HRO.
TriNet (PEO or ASO) The hallmark of a PEO is that they self-administer their benefits programs. This means that when you partner with a PEO, you must use their health plans and options. Because they build rather large pools, this does become risk adverse for businesses, but it does restrict your freedom to choose your broker. HR Plus, TriNet’s ASO, on the other hand, allows you to choose your own broker, or use a TriNet preferred broker.
Corban OneSource (HRO or MSP) In keeping with the theme of autonomy, you get to work with any broker of your choice. Corban OneSource is broker-agnostic, meaning we will work with your preferred vendor. Additionally, our HEROES team and online portal offer a white glove treatment for your employees to get information on their plans, follow up on claims, and make elections during open enrollment, among other services.
What this means: TriNet’s PEO health plans are great for small businesses or start-ups but are difficult to scale. Switching to their ASO model makes it easy to scale. Corban OneSource offers complete autonomy choosing your preferred broker, and the service team offers a total supplemental, high-end experience for you and your employees.
What is the primary difference between Corban OneSource and TriNet?
The main difference between Corban OneSource and TriNet is that TriNet pushes a self-service operation for the client, whether under the PEO or ASO model, leaving live teams as a last resort. Corban OneSource, on the other hand, strongly emphasizes the customer experience aspect as a managed services provider (MSP). While you will get elbow deep into TriNet’s proprietary software on a daily basis, Corban OneSource removes your need to ever touch your software for routine HR tasks. This allows you to focus more closely on the strategic component of your HR department.
When companies begin to grow and they reach midsized status (around 75 employees or so), a PEO arrangement becomes more expensive. It is a difficult model to scale, hence why most PEO companies partner with small businesses. TriNet adroitly introduced their ASO model to transfer companies who have outgrown their PEO model and continue the partnership. In theory this makes sense for retention, however, there is an elephant in the room – TriNet’s experience with this model is only one year old.
Corban OneSource has been serving the same midsized and mid-market companies for nearly three decades. As one of the oldest HR outsourcing firms in the United States, this experience is inimitable. TriNet HR Plus has only been around for a year, and while they had the resources to build this new leg of their operations, it is still in its infancy. Administration of the ASO program is wildly different than their customary PEO model, promising that this learning curve will be ever steeper.
The Bottom Line: Corban OneSource vs. TriNet
Midsized businesses need a totally different HR model for support as they grow. Small businesses do extremely well when partnering with PEOs, but as your operation expands, so too do the needs placed upon your HR department. Corban OneSource understands this and this is why we built our platform as a managed services provider. We effectively become an extension of your HR team.
An HRO and MSP allows for more autonomy and control over your HR department by removing your administrative burden. We give you the freedom to focus on strategy and implementing plans to set your business up for success. Own your HR department. Choose Corban OneSource HR outsourcing.
